Sound Percussion is a comprehensive resource covering the most fundamental concepts your intermediate to advanced percussion students will need to perform confidently on Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Accessory Percussion, Mallet Percussion, and Timpani. A consistent, methodical approach is used throughout to promote a complete understanding of the concepts introduced, with plenty of reinforcement. Whether you choose to focus on a particular instrument, or a full percussion ensemble, Sound Percussion provides many engaging and fun exercises, etudes, and full-ensemble pieces. Having a variety of exercises with similar goals will reinforce their developing abilities, as well as keep them engaged.
Every student has a meaningful and thoughtful part for each exercise that will motivate practicing and make lessons exciting. The progression of rhythms, skills, and note introduction, as well as the pacing of each, has been carefully considered to promote true comprehension and student development. Each chapter follows a logical flow with the introduction of skills and concepts, followed by many exercises and performance opportunities for reinforcement and application. Mallet note-reading and performance are approached in a unique and revolutionary way by introducing two to three notes at time rather than the whole scale, and making the exercises more rhythmically interesting than scales. This approach allows students to attain a greater understanding of the concepts being introduced without overwhelming them with too much too soon.
Depending on the specific educational objective of each lesson and the needs of the students, directors can work through the book(s) progressively or jump from chapter to chapter. Use it as you see fit! Because you’ll now have all the tools needed to help prepare students for any challenge they may face musically, Sound Percussion will give you, the director, a renewed sense of confidence in helping to foster student understanding, growth, development, precision, performance, and excitement as they work towards becoming well-rounded percussionists.
